GENERAL
The ALFA Labor & Employment Practice Group (the “Group”) is one of the largest and most active of the ALFA Practice Groups. Current membership in the Group is comprised of over 150 lawyers from 60 member law firms. The Group prides itself on developing programs and publishing reference materials that provide in-house counsel with practical solutions to challenging labor and employment issues. The nationwide and substantial international membership in this Group offers highly-skilled, cost-effective, and coordinated legal services to employers with multi-state and/or multi-national work forces.
FOCUS
Lawyers within this Group handle a wide range of labor and employment issues which traverse the gamut of this subject matter area. While litigation comprises a significant portion of most members’ labor and employment practice, many member lawyers devote considerable time to mediation, counseling, corporate compliance, and representation before administrative and regulatory agencies. Coordination with ALFA International’s Workers Compensation Practice Group adds valuable depth to the capabilities of this Group. Members have substantial experience with the following labor and employment issues:
- Employment contracts
- Non-compete agreements
- Trade Secrets/Non-disclosure
- Termination/Wrongful discharge
- Civil rights and discrimination
- Sexual harassment
- Substance abuse
- Wage and Hour
- OSHA
- ADA
- Unions/union organizing
- Compliance programs
ACTIVITIES
The Group undertakes a wide range of activities. An annual three-day seminar is presented which showcases many lawyers within the Group and their clients as speakers, panelists, moderators, and break-out session leaders. Between these major programs, Group lawyers present tele-seminars on a regular basis, focusing on recent developments in labor and employment law. Members frequently speak before major trade associations, professional organizations, and client meetings. Group lawyers are also active in many labor and employment law organizations.
PUBLICATIONS
The Group publishes a diverse collection of educational materials. An extensive coursebook is distributed at the major three-day seminars. The Group also publishes a compendium of state and federal labor and employment laws for quick reference by ALFA clients. A biannual newsletter was introduced in 2004, containing articles by members on federal and state labor law issues, specifically geared for in-house counsel. Group lawyers are frequently published in bar association journals.
